ROQUE ST CHRISTOPHE

Halfway between Les Eyzies and Montignac-Lascaux, in the heart of the Valley de la Vézère – listed World Heritage by UNESCO – The Roque St Christophe cliff is a refuge built by the People of the Cliffs thousands of the years ago. This site is truly magnificient not only for its rare and wild beauty but also for its powerful shapes, its numerous dwellings and the length of time it was occupied by mankind. This one kilometer long and eighty meters high true limestone wall has been constantly eroded by the river and the frost thus shaping hundreds of rock shelters and long overhead terraces. These natural cavities have been occupied by mankind since prehistoric times and the were altered to become a fort and the town from the Middle Ages until the start of the Renaissance. A tour of the Roque St Christophe gives you an idea of how the cave dwellings were laid-out to be inhabited. There, you can discover our ancestors’ traces left all along the rock. A museum of civil engineering machines has been reconstructed to pay tribute to the great medieval builders.
